Industry Commentary

The NZ sawn timber industry uses many diverse systems to maintain inventory, record sales and produce export documentation. The day is coming when the NZ sawn timber industry is going to “get together” in its approach to export sales. This will be forced by the requirement to satisfy export orders by sourcing stock from more than one sawn timber producer. When this day finally arrives (and in some cases it already has) the industry will suddenly realise that the systems in place are not capable of supporting this model.

The model could occur in a number of ways -
• An industry board similar to the “Fonterra” setup
• Trading and/or distribution companies
• The larger companies using smaller suppliers to “top up” their export shipments.

Given the current climate and the “fiercely independent” sawmilling industry the first option is not likely in the immediate future. The best guess at what will happen is that a combination of the two other models will continue to “evolve”. No matter how it happens any company or group will require computer based systems that as a minimum will provide –
• Stock availability by product at potential supplier sites
• The ability to sell and produce export documentation for stock provided by multiple suppliers.

In summary many of the technical issues have been or can be overcome. The solution involves a much more internet-aware timber industry. The major issue is the lack of desire by the industry to commit time, effort or funding to systems. This is particularly the case where the system is not “owned” by the exporting company. The industry must be prepared to assist smaller suppliers to maintain accurate stocks and develop internet-capability.
